The message is displayed when you enter a command that tries to access to a disk in Error state. A disk may physically go to error state due to disconnection or bad sectors. Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) marks such a disk as in Error state when an operation is performed on the disk for the first time.

To solve the problem:

 

  1. Restore the disk to physically healthy state.

     
  2. Refresh the disk connectivity in VxVM database by the vxdisk scandisks command.

     
  3. Attach the disk to the disk group. Enter:

vxreattach –g <disk_group_name> <disk_name>

 

VxVM also provides the vxattachd daemon to perform steps 2 and 3 automatically in background, which costs 3-5 minutes. It is enabled by default. You can manually start it by:

/etc/vx/bin/vxattachd [mail_address...]
