This message is displayed when you try to shrink the size of a dynamic volume. The volume shrink operation fails if the volume's "dirty bit" is set, which leaves the file system in an inconsistent state. The error could also occur if there is not enough disk space or if an application is using the volume.

To fix file system errors on the volume, enter the following Chkdsk command using the command prompt:
 

chkdsk x: /f
 

where x is the drive letter of the volume you want to check.
 

Also, make sure that no other applications are using the volume that you want to shrink. Close the applications, and try to shrink the volume again.
