About simplified management using Dynamic Multi-Pathing in the hypervisor and guest

Symantec Dynamic Multi-Pathing (DMP) for VMware provides an out-of-box experience of path management. DMP simplifies the path management so that you do not have to customize the path management.

DMP provides templates to ensure that all nodes in an ESX cluster are identically configured.

DMP provides an user interface that is integrated into the vCenter, so that you can easily access information about the storage attributes, extended attributes, and types of storage in the environment. The integration into the vCenter simplifies the management of your storage as you do not have to exit the vSphere client to manage the storage.

If you also have DMP running in the individual guests, the same storage and configuration information is visible to both the hypervisor and the guest. This functionality provides an integrated management solution.

DMP also provides a command line interface. If you have Symantec Storage Foundation and High Availability Solutions products in the physical (non-virtualized) environment, you can use the same command set, storage name space, and platform in the VMware environment. The command syntax is the same for DMP in the guest and DMP in the host.

To achieve simplified management using DMP, install DMP for VMware in the hypervisor.

See the Symantec Dynamic Multi-Pathing Installation Guide - VMware ESX.

For added integration, install DMP in the guests as either stand-alone DMP for Linux or as a component of Storage Foundation, Storage Foundation High Availability, or Storage Foundation Cluster File System High Availability.

See the respective Installation Guide for your product.
