Storage Foundation, Storage Foundation High Availability, or Storage Foundation Cluster File System High Availability can be installed in the VMware guest. The SmartIO feature of SFHA Solutions improves I/O performance by using an SSD or other fast locally-attached device as a cache. To enable SmartIO to function effectively and to overcome SmartIO limitations in the VMware environment, use the SmartPool functionality in the ESXi host. The SmartPool feature enables you to create a storage pool of SSDs and other local devices, which can then be assigned to the virtual machines running SmartIO.
The solution of SmartIO and SmartPool provides the following benefits:
Enables you to improve caching performance by striping I/Os across the available devices in the SmartPool.
Enables you to share SSD cards between multiple VMware guests.
Enables you to use the SmartIO functionality from the SFHA running in the VMware guest.
Enables you to dynamically grow or shrink the cache size used for each virtual machine.
Enables you to use vMotion to migrate the virtual machines while SFHA is running and caching data.
