About basic disks

Basic disks are disks that have the standard partitioning scheme used by Windows NT, Windows 95/98, and MS-DOS. Disks configured on a fresh system are defined as basic disks. If the Windows operating system is installed, you have your system and boot partition already set up as a basic disk partition. This partition is created as a part of the Windows install process. Once Storage Foundation is running, you do not need to create any more basic disk partitions. You can then set up dynamic disk groups and volumes with your remaining storage to make them into dynamic disks. It is not necessary to place partitions on a new disk for it to be made into a dynamic disk through Storage Foundation.
