Upgrading basic disks to dynamic

All basic disks, except the ones that include system or boot partition, can be upgraded to dynamic disks through Storage Foundation. To upgrade a basic disk to a dynamic disk, you need to create a dynamic disk group and include the disk in the group.

See About creating dynamic disk groups.

The basic disk does not have to include a partition on it; but if it does, a primary partition becomes a simple dynamic volume, and any logical drives within an extended partition also become simple volumes. The extended partition no longer exists.

The process of upgrading a basic partition to a dynamic volume is called "encapsulation," because it encapsulates the partition information within the dynamic volume structure.
