Example: Faster and consistent provisioning of storage

As an administrator, you are responsible for ensuring the optimal provisioning of storage to volumes.

In Veritas Operations Manager, you can use Storage Provisioning Add-on for creating storage templates from existing storage objects such as volumes, disk groups, and file systems. It discovers the configuration details of the Veritas Volume Manager, Veritas File System, Storage Foundation for Windows, and New Technology File System (NTFS) objects to create a storage template with minimal user effort. You can use these templates to quickly and consistently provision storage configurations.

For information on using Storage Provisioning Add-on, refer to the Veritas Operations Manager Management Server Add-ons User's Guide.

In Veritas Operations Manager, you can use Storage Insight Add-on to define the tiers for LUNs. Storage Insight Add-on lets you define the tiers for the LUNs based on one or more of the following parameters:

For information on using the Storage Insight Add-on, refer to the Veritas Operations Manager Management Server Add-ons User's Guide.

When you define a storage provisioning template, you can select the tiers for the LUNs, which you have created using Storage Insight Add-on.

This example explains how you can assign storage on tiers to volumes. The example considers LUNs from an HITACHI enclosure and an EMC CLARiiON enclosure. The example, uses the following names:

Table: Names used in the example

Object

Name

HITACHI enclosure

HITACHI

EMC CLARiiON enclosure

EMC_CLAR

Tier that you create for the LUNs associated with the HITACHI enclosure

sample_tier1

Tier that you create for the LUNs associated with the EMC_CLAR enclosure

sample_tier2

Volume based on which you create the storage template

sample_existing_volume

Host that contains the volume sample_existing_volume

sample_host1

Disk group on which sample_existing_volume is created

sample_existing_dg

Disk group that you create using the disks in the HITACHI and the EMC_CLAR enclosures

sample_dg

Host that contains the sample_dg disk group

sample_host2

Volumes that you create on sample_dg using the sample_volstortemplate storage template.

sample_vol1 and sample_vol2

In this example, the following tasks are performed for assigning the storage from tiers to the volumes:

To define a tier for the LUN that is associated with the HITACHI enclosure

  1. In the Veritas Operations Manager console, select Settings > Enclosure.
  2. In the Enclosure Management view, click the tab Tier Configurations.
  3. Click Actions > New Tier Definition.
  4. In the New Tier Definition panel, specify the Tier Label. Select the rules and click Save.

In this panel, specify the enclosure as HITACHI.

Repeat steps 1-4 for defining a tier for the LUN that is associated with the EMC_CLAR enclosure. In the New Tier Definition panel, specify the enclosure as EMC_CLAR.

For information on using Storage Insight Add-on to define tiers, refer to the Veritas Operations Manager Management Server Add-ons User's Guide.

To create the sample_dg disk group on the host sample_host2

  1. In the Veritas Operations Manager console, select Manage > Hosts.
  2. In the list of hosts, right-click host sample_host2. From the submenu, click Create Disk Group.
  3. In the Disk Group Options wizard panel, specify the required information and click Next.

In this panel, you must do the following:

    • Enter the disk group name as: sample_dg.

    • Select the check box Enable cross-platform data sharing.

    • Under Name the disks using, select the option Device Name.

  4. In the Disk Selection panel, select the disks that are part of the enclosures HITACHI and EMC_CLAR and click Next.
  5. In the Create Disk Group Summary wizard panel, verify the specifications for the disk group and click Finish.
  6. In the Result panel, click OK.

For information on using Add-on for Storage Foundation Administration to create disk groups, refer to the Veritas Operations Manager Management Server Add-ons User's Guide.

This example discusses how you can create the sample_volstortemplate storage template to provision the storage from the HITACHI and the EMC_CLAR enclosures to the two mirrors that are part of the sample_vol1 volume. You can use this template to provision the storage from the HITACHI enclosure to Mirror 1 and the storage from the EMC_CLAR enclosure to Mirror 2.

Create the sample_volstortemplate storage template to provision the storage to the two mirrors of the sample_vol1 volume

  1. In the Veritas Operations Manager console, click Solutions.
  2. Under Storage Provisioning, click Manage Storage Templates.
  3. In the Storage Template view, click Create Storage Template.
  4. In the Create Storage Template wizard panel, choose Using volumes and click Next.
  5. In the Create Storage Template - Select host, disk group, VxFS or volumes options panel, select the host sample_host1, the sample_existing_dg disk group, and the sample_existing_volume volume and click Next.
  6. In the Create Storage Template - Summary options panel, enter the storage template name as sample_volstortemplate. Also, type out the description for the template.
  7. Select the file system object from the left navigation tree and click the Summary, Parameters, and Advanced tabs to view or update the file system name, description and parameters.
  8. In the left navigation tree, select the volume object and click the Summary, Parameters, and the Advanced tabs to view or update the details of the volume and click Save.

This example provides the volume name as sample_vol1. For sample_vol1, under the Parameters tab, do the following:

    • In the Layout field, select Mirror Concat.

    • In the # Mirrors field, select 2.

    • In the Rules for selecting LUNs field, under Mirror 1, select the enclosure as HITACHI and the tier as sample_tier1.

Under Mirror 2, select the enclosure as EMC_CLAR and the tier as sample_tier2.

    • In the Mirror Across Enclosure field, select Yes.

  9. In the Results panel, click OK.

For information on creating the storage template or editing the storage template, refer to the Veritas Operations Manager Management Server Add-ons User's Guide.

To provision the storage to the two mirrors that is part of the sample_vol1 volume

  1. In the Veritas Operations Manager console, click Solutions.
  2. In the Solutions view, under Storage Provisioning, click Provision Storage.
  3. In the Provision Storage options wizard panel, select the host and the disk group on which the storage needs to be provisioned as sample_host2 and sample_dg and click Next.
  4. In the next panel, select the storage template sample_volstortemplate that you have created and click Next.
  5. In the next panel, review the information on the file system, volume, and the mirrors that are to be created. To provision the storage to the two mirrors that are part of the sample_vol1 volume, click Submit.

For information on provisioning the storage, refer to the Veritas Operations Manager Management Server Add-ons User's Guide.
